About Korea

South Korea, located on the south eastern end of Asia is a beautiful country rich in culture and diversity .  Mountains make up 70% of the land which why hiking is very popular here.  The country is divided up into 9 provinces, the largest of which being Seoul which is also the capital.  The are a number of stunning beaches around the country but the most popular beach is Haeundae which is located in Busan (second largest city).

The Korean flag is called the taegeukgi.  The design symbolizes the principal of the the yin and yang in Asian Philosophy.  The circle in the centre of the flag is divided into two equal parts, with the red representing the forces of yang and the blue representing the forces of yin.  The lines in each corner symbolizes one of the four universal elements.

Korea is blessed to experience four distinct seasons.  Most warm days can be expected from March to May when the trees blossom with the most beautiful flowers to mark the start of spring.  Monsoon rains usually begin around the end of June and last until mid-to-late July.  The summer months are hot and humid.  Fall is by far the most pleasant season as there is a good balance in the temperature.  Winters and cold and dry with occasional snow.

The language spoke by the locals is know as Hangeul.  The Korean alphabet is composed of 10 simple vowels and 14 consonants.  Learning to read and write Hangeul is fairly simple, the language becomes slightly tricky when it comes to pronunciation, fortunately, Koreans are understanding and appreciate every little effort made by foreigners trying to speak their language.  The real change with Korean is the grammar since is opposite to English.  With much practice and the help of friendly Koreans you will be able to pick up key words and phrases that will make communication easier.

Korean food is generally very spicy.  In one sitting, you will be treated to a bowl of rice, a soup and several side dishes ranging from an array of pickled and fresh vegetables, to meat, fish and of course kimchi.  Kimchi is fermented cabbage which is spicy and sour.  Every meal including breakfast features kimchi.

South Korea is a strong nation who has been able to rise above the adversities of war and invasions.  They are united and very patriotic .  Older Koreans are generally very conservative and tend to frown upon public displays of affection as well fashion choices of the youth.  Above all, Koreans (with the exception of a few) are friendly and hospitable and will make every effort to ensure your comfort in their country.
